This is not my definition of success

This is not my definition of success

July 13, 20253 min read

In the first 5 months of this year, I made more money than I made in all of last year.

On my last Asian speaking tour, over 5.5 weeks, I delivered:

  • 28 speaking events

  • Across Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Singapore and online events for top MNCs and public institutions

Averaging more than 1 event per day.

And that doesn’t even include:

  • The 1:1 coaching work I do.

  • The Relationships That Work group coaching program.

  • And all the other stuff involved in running a business.

And so… I dropped the ball.

I didn’t…

  • Respond to emails

  • Follow up with people I met at conferences and events

  • Reply to or message people on LinkedIn or other social media

  • Have time to guide my team on their work

  • Grow the business the way we planned

I also didn’t have time or energy to…

  • Spend time with my family

  • Date my husband

  • See my friends

  • Exercise

  • Meditate

  • Sleep

  • Enjoy life

I continued to deliver my best to the clients I support, as I have always done.
Which is why my work exploded - more new client referrals, and more work from existing clients.

“Yours is the best talk I’ve seen at one of these events." - Global finance industry conference organizer.

“Your coaching program is a better investment than an Hermes bag.” - 1:1 coaching + Relationships That Work program client

“You got the highest rating of any speaker we’ve had.” - Global luxury brand training leader

And… the last few weeks I’ve even been getting 1-3 queries , 3-4 days a week for speaking events for the fall.

This is a successful career.

But this is not a successful life.

So, I went on slow mode the last week.

Time to make room in my mind, my heart, and my spirit so I can (continue to):

  • Do the work I love

  • Support the clients I love

  • Live the life I love

  • Spend time with family and friends

  • Spend quiet time with myself.

  • Continue work on myself, and grow spiritually.

  • Support my physical health - do a good job of eating well, sleeping well, and exercising well.

Here’s what I’m doing to reset:

  1. Revisit and re-clarify what are my priorities, values, and goals.

  2. Make time for what’s important + mark it on my calendar to prioritize my time and energy for what’s important to me.

  3. Aggressively delegate what I can and get help both at work and at home, negotiate responsibilities that can be shared.

  4. Communicate my needs and wants clearly so work and family understand and support the shift I’m making (no surprises) - and invite discussion where appropriate to make it a collaborative process.

  5. Be (more) fully present whatever I’m doing at the moment, so I can fully savor it AND truly connect with people at work and at home. Can’t connect with people if your eyes are glued to your phone and your mind is elsewhere.

Clarity needs a quiet mind.
Inspiration needs a quiet heart.

That’s why starting tomorrow, I’m gifting myself with a 4-day mindfulness retreat.

What are you doing to be ready for what comes in the 2nd half of 2025?
